Using the iconography and colors of the American flag, I examined the relationships between American patriotism and my own feelings of shame and outrage over the US prison industrial complex and racial bias of our justice system.  My implementation of the material shellac subverts its traditional use in wood finishing.  The 'lac' in shellac is secreted by the female lac bug exclusively, which I interpret as an inherently feminist product and material.  I draw inspiration from the mother of the color field movement, Helen Frankenthaler.
